Get Into New York City Museums for Less on Art Museum Day

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

On Wednesday, May 18, a host of New York City museums will offer reduced or free admission and special programs for Art Museum Day. The Studio Museum in Harlem, MoMA, the Brooklyn Museum, the Bronx Museum and others join counterparts across the U.S. offering reduced admission rates for this annual day of arts appreciation.

It's the second year the Association of Art Museum Directors has organized Art Museum Day. The day coincides with International Museum Day, in which museums around the world take a look at one single issue — this year the theme is "Museum and Memory" — affecting cultural organizations. International Museum Day started in 1977.

Here's a short list of New York City museums offering up deals on Wednesday:

I feel much the same as Keith from NYC. Museum admission tends to be too expensive.

Free admission for local residents assumes municipal support for these institutions. What support does the city give our museums?

Finally, if you think museums are expensive here, try visiting museums in almost any other nation, including Canada. We were in Toronto recently and the Art museum was so expensive that we went out to eat instead.

Unfortunately, the steep admission prices of NYC museums are a deterrant to many native New Yorkers, and these locations are visited mostly by tourists. We should welcome out tourists, but many cities around the world give free or discounted admission to residents of the city in which such an institution is located, as afterall, they benefit from our taxes. MUSEUMS IN NYC should be FREE for residents of NYC!

Such great information. New Yorkers love to get up and go but this event gives them even more incentive to see some of the work of terrific curators. Thanks, Erica, love reading your column on the arts. I am on my way to the Museum of Arts and Design to take advantage of this offer. Keep informing us.
