In the early '90s in Germany, Oval was one of the bands which pioneered a style of electronic music known as Glitch, in which the digital blips accidentally caused by scratching CDs were sampled and rearranged into what was sometimes called “post-digital” music. These days, Markus Popp is still working under the name Oval, and he has taken some of Glitch's musical sonic qualities and repurposed them towards a new kind of instrumental songcraft. Oval now mixes blips and mixes with guitars, drums, and psychedelic sounds. In “Ah,” Oval achieves something remarkable: he makes digital glitches sound like a beautiful, snowy day.
