Bang On A Can notes its marathon as "Lollapalooza advised by the ghost of John Cage". Founded in 1987, the celebration consists of a mass of musicians, composers, and listeners collaborating on uninterrupted live ear-bending border-crossing music from around the corner and around the globe.

Friday nights at the Whitney Live series provide free concerts in the lower gallery and sculpture court with admission. No fear, it's pay-what-you-wish on Fridays from 6-9pm. But note, there are no special tickets or reservations. So if your summer Fridays haven't started, or don't exist, jump uptown right after work to guarantee a spot downstairs.

Chicago's indie-rock vets WILCO curate the Solid Sounds weekend of music and arts. For just under a hundred bucks, North Adams, MA may just be the best destination on the East Coast this weekend.

The NY Philharmonic In The Park series features FREE performances with a firework finale in some of the best outdoor venues in the city. Sorry Queens, due to construction, no fireworks for you. Roosevelt Island hosts the first annual "record fair and musical celebration" of Albert Ayler. There wil be 8 hours of tribute to the legendary free-jazz tenor-saxophonist who died in 1970.

Satureday, July10

The summer-long Jazzmobile series holds 45 free concerts throughout all five boroughs. On July 10 the series teams up with The Central Park Conservancy for a jazz explosion up on 106th Street featuring Jimmy Heath, Ray Mantilla and Dion Parson's 21st Century Band.

Sunday, July 11 through Sunday, August 28
